The Basement @ Hong Leong is a cafe-style food hall nestled within the commercial bustle of 16 Raffles Quay. Its location makes it a convenient spot for office workers and visitors seeking an air-conditioned respite during the midday rush. The space combines casual dining with a variety of independent stalls, reflecting Singapore’s multicultural food scene with offerings like Korean bibimbap, Chinese herbal chicken, beef noodles, and tea-focused drinks.

The atmosphere here leans towards functional and airy rather than cozy or boutique. It’s not the kind of place to linger over a cup of coffee in the morning but works well for grabbing a quick, satisfying meal or a light snack away from the outdoor heat. The shared dining concept, favored after the shift caused by Covid-19, encourages a communal vibe, albeit in a practical sense more than a social hub.

Locals and office workers appreciate the diversity of options, especially on hot Singapore days when air conditioning is a priority. This cafeteria-style setting is ideal for those who want variety without sacrificing convenience or affordability. The food choices span from hearty Korean and Thai dishes to simpler staples like salmon omelette or pretzels, catering to a wide range of lunchtime preferences.

Visiting around lunch hours on weekdays offers the best experience to catch the full range of food stalls without too much crowding. It’s less about the ambiance and more about a reliable spot for diverse meals in the financial district, with enough seating that doesn't feel cramped despite the central location. While the standard of some Korean options might be inconsistent based on local feedback, there are standouts like the Chinese herbal chicken that draw repeat visitors.

  • Best for a practical lunch break in air-conditioned comfort
  • Appeals mostly to office workers and busy professionals
  • Offers a variety of Asian and fusion dishes under one roof
  • The shared dining format encourages a no-fuss, communal eating experience

Good that the number of eateries have decreased due to covid, should have been in the first place. Empty shops have been replaced with shared dining spaces, a practice that should be continued. Korean food remains popular though the standard is bad. My favorite is the Chinese herbal chicken that moved from China Square.

There are many choices of delicious foods here and most importantly it is aircon inside! Super comfortable for a lunch during hot day. I tried the Thai food, Korean food and salad bowl here. All good! And the price is pretty affordable. Worth to come again.
